Secrets to Overcoming- Part 1
I'll just say right up front that title sounds way too lofty for me. I am not a guru nor a doctoral graduate. Just a simple girl who still has Christmas tree needles that need to be vacuumed and boxes of decorations begging to be put back into the attic.

But inside this simple girl beats a heart confident in the absolute power of God to help us overcome. Remember the verse from Revelation 2:7 I shared on Tuesday? "...To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."

For the next several posts I want to uncover the secrets to overcoming. Too many of us are stuck in something we think we'll never overcome. But Jesus girls aren't made to be stuck. We are made for victory. And I'm talking big victories here.

The thing that trips us up is the struggle between our stuck places and certain victory. Though we are perfectly equipped for these struggles, we sometimes get frustrated trying to understand our instruction manual. The Bible can seem daunting, complicated, and hard to apply to everyday life.

But like anything else big, if we break it into bite sized pieces and have the desire to know truth, God will take our willingness and turn it into understanding.

That's the way I tip-toed up to this verse in Revelation. "God, I want to see what you want me to see in these verses. Here's my willingness- I give it to you. Please turn it into understanding."

Secret To Overcoming #1- The first thing I notice about this verse is that overcoming is possible.

We must believe that. But, it is only possible within the guidelines God sets. With my 'getting healthy' pursuits, I'd bought the lie that this was just an issue I'd struggle with my whole life. Overcoming wasn't possible for me. Not in this area.

That's a lie.

While I do think it's something I'll have to consciously choose obedience in, I do believe now that I can overcome the vicious cycles of defeat.

But it won't come from worldly wisdom.

Overcoming defeat must come from godly wisdom to be true and lasting. I could have gone on a crash diet of some sorts, lost all kinds of weight, looked fantastic but still be stuck in the old thought patterns. The weight would come back. The defeat would be crushing. And I would be left thinking overcoming is for other people but not me.

That's a lie.

Overcoming is possible.

Secret number 2- Return to your first love.

We must love God more than we love the object of our temptation. Right before Revelation 2 talks about overcoming in verse 7, we find a warning that we've forgotten our first love.

I'll write more on this in my next post. But first, I want to hear from you.

What does 'returning to your first love' mean to you? How can we return to our first love? What discourages you or encourages you about returning to your first love?

I can't wait for tomorrow's post. I have a story to share that simply blew my socks off. Which is yet another reason I must now go and deal with those Christmas tree needles. And pick the winners from the contest earlier this week.

Without a doubt- I will get it together and post the winners tomorrow.

In the meantime... I can't wait to read your thoughts in response to my questions above.
