Life can be hard on a woman. And while I don't have all the answers of keeping everything balanced, I discovered something that has radically changed my life.
And when I say radically, I mean absolutely, 360 degrees changed my life.
I learned how to ask God to be my portion each day. Let me explain.
I was once in the grocery store when I ran into a friend. She asked if I would be attending the school's fundraiser event that weekend. I told her I'd be contributing but I had a speaking engagement and wouldn't be able to be at the actual event.
Her response shot out like a dagger straight to my heart, "I don't know how you leave your kids like you do. I could never do that."
I quietly pretended like I needed to rearrange the contents of my cart to avoid eye contact with her while she finished dumping out the rest of her thoughts on this matter. I should have said, "I'd love for you to help me understand what you just said." And then I could have given her an assured, non-emotional, Jesus has settled this issue in my heart answer.
Instead I ended the conversation as quickly as possible, cut my shopping trip short, headed to the car and cried. I started questioning whether or not I was a good mom. I started doubting my judgement about missing the school fundraiser. I started holding my imperfections up to the seemingly perfect daily performance of my accuser and felt woefully inadequate.
Ever been there?
This why we have to hold on tightly to the Lord. This is why we have to ask Jesus to be our portion each day. Wherever we fall short, we have a choice to make. We can use this shortcoming to beat ourselves up or we can use this shortcoming as an opportunity to let Jesus work mightily in our life.
I don't say this lightly.
I don't say it because I'm trying to be the Christian Pollyanna walking about sprinkling trite Jesus answers.
I know life can be stinkin' hard.
I say hold tightly to the Lord because as we navigate unpredictable life each day, He is completely trustworthy, completely loving, completely present, completely unchanging and COMPLETELY able to fill in our gaps with His perfect portion.
Therefore, each day I simply offer up my willingness to be a godly woman. "Here it is Lord. My willingness. But here is where I know I fall short .....______________. So, will You be my portion in this area?"
Maybe I'm struggling in my marriage... "God will You be the portion I need to be a godly wife just for today?" And then I keep praying that portion prayer day after day after day. Eventually, I will wake up and realize I've become a godly wife.
Maybe I'm struggling with patience... "God will You be the portion of patience I need just for today?" And then I keep praying that day after day. Eventually, I will wake up and realize I've become a patient woman.
Maybe I'm struggling with balance... "God will you be the portion of balance I need just for today?" And then I keep praying that day after day until one day I wake up and realize I have become a woman who knows how to balance her life.
Teaching this portion prayer and all the Bible has to say about this is one of my most favorite topics because it works. It really has helped me become a more balanced woman who is more deeply connected to my Jesus.
