Not Forgotten
Forgotten.

That's what Brooke felt as the rest of the cast was on stage singing their hearts out in the show finale. She was backstage in a puddle of confusion and tears.

An innocent mistake. A missed cue by one of the backstage directors. A little girl, in a beautiful dress, pink lips, and hair curled to perfection, ready to sing her heart out- was left out.

She sat in the dark and let the tears slip down her checks, one after another until they became a steady stream. Her blackened eyelashes melted. Her rosy blush wiped off leaving her skin vulnerable and pale.

This is how I found Brooke after last Thursday's dress rehearsal.

"I don't think they want me in the play Mama. I don't think my part matters at all."

"Oh sweetheart- you know that's not true," I tried to comfort her while navigating around her mascara threatening to ruin my new pink sweater. Oh for Pete's sake Lysa, let her mascara ruin your new pink sweater.

I pulled her tiny body into my most tenderly fierce embrace.

And then I smiled.

God, the Great Provider, had already given me the perfect answer to comfort this precious girl's heart. I was supposed to be speaking this weekend in Houston. I'd been booked for months before Brooke even decided to be in this play.

We were both sad that I'd have to miss the performance but took comfort in me being able to sit through the final dress rehearsal which would be very close to seeing the real show.

Then at the last minute, the event in Houston cancelled.

In all of my years speaking, this is only the second time this has happened.

"Sweet heart, God has arranged all of eternity to make sure Mama could be here this weekend. I don't think He'd do that if your part didn't matter. Yes, you were mistakenly left out today. But you are not forgotten. Not today. Not ever."

I think we've all probably had thoughts at one time or another that we don't matter. We're just not important at all.

What a lie that is.

Oh sweet sister, do you know that today?

In John 15:9 Jesus reminds us, "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now, remain in my love."

Remain.

Remain assured.

Remain confident.

Remain certain.

Remain secure.

Remain loved.

And remember, this life is but a dress rehearsal. Even if you sometimes get left out, the day is coming where you will be the star of the grandest show this world has ever seen.

Jesus will take your hand, lean in close, and whisper, "See, I told you I'd be here. You, my darling, were never forgotten."

Hug that precious little girl of yours for me. God has not forgotten her, she is engraved on the palm of His hand. (Is.49:16)

Lysa, I just arrived home after walking for two hours. Just had to get outside. I've been feeling lost and forgotten. I came home, turned on my computer, and read this post. I'm cryng now, not because I feel forgotten, but because of the joy in knowing I am NOT forgotten. Thanks for the reminder.

Hugs,
Joy

This so ministers to my heart today. It has taken such a beating these last few weeks, and I have been feeling like I am running uphill the whole time trying to trust in God's timing and will.

Thank you for reminding me that God is always for me, even if I don't understand the how, why, or when.

Have a blessed day!

Oh how I love and praise God for not forgetting us and for loving us!!

I loved this post. I loved that you first tried to avoid the mascara from ruining your sweater!

I loved how you then forgot about the sweater! :)

You are a blessing to me Lysa!!

Well, I'm certainly glad I'm NOT wearing mascara right now. sniff. That was so beautiful.

I got left out this week myself. My first writing piece was to appear in a book, edited by Cecil Murphey no less, coming out in Oct. Contracts signed, edits done. Email: "We regret to inform you the Sr Editor at the Publisher has cut your piece." What? This was my big break! My name in a book! With Cecil Murphey! No...not this time.

So I too must remain assured & confident and keep writing. My day will come.

Hope Brooke's show is SO awesome & you're the proudest mama ever!

I love this one, Lysa. Thank you!

lysa,
i was one of those people you were to speak with in houston this weekend. and i had tears when i heard thursday they were cancelling the event. i had been waiting since january to see you. you came here for a radio weekend but i could not get to that one. i was so happy when i found out i had a second chance because you were coming again in april. i really was mad w/Jesus for taking this opportunity away from me. but now reading your post i feel miserable 7 different ways. of course you needed to be with your precious daughter. and how small i feel for being so self centered. i am so very very happy you got to be there for her. give her a great big hug on behalf of houston/the woodlands!
take care

Lysa,
What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing this with us. It really amazing how God orchestrates everything in a beautiful symphony. When this happens to me, I can hardly believe that God would take the time out of his busy schedule to do amazing things for me. Then, I remember that he is omniscient and can do anything and everything at once!

Hugs to both of you.

I think we all want to be noticed, included and valued for our roll. I am just so glad that God gave you those words of comfort for her.

Also, I love how you show that none of us get it right, even when we are getting it right. The comment about worrying about your new pink sweater is so typical of every mother. Even when we are trying so hard to be what God calls us to be for our kids, our human-ness always makes a play for center stage. Thanks for being willing to show that in your writing!

I could feel Brooke's pain. It is so easy for us "girls" to feel insecure, forgotten, etc. But our Abba God has not forgotten us. Our days have been ordained and written in His book long before we came to be. What a comfort to know that He knows what kind of day we are going to have before we have it and He hand is there to guide us and to hold us fast. No-our Father has not forgotten us.

My goodness; now I am sobbing again. You have such a way with words that touch many hearts. I am so thankful I am not forgotten even though at times I feel like I am so lost.
It is amazing what God can do at just the right moments and turn the problems into a wonderful situation.
I am so glad you were there for Brooke; give her a hug from me; I hate to see children cry. With God, all things are possible!

What a tender post, Lysa :)

So sweet :) Bless your daughter's heart!

Have a lovely week,
Kate :)

Thanks for this Lysa - you have no idea the chord it struck in my heart tonight. I've been feeling pretty "forgotten" lately, so I really needed that reminder that it's all a distant shadow of much greater things to come. I am so very, very thankful at this time in my life that this isn't all there is.

Praise be to God! Come, Lord Jesus, come. And make it real soon.

Lysa,

My very shy daughter was in the same play and thought that her only line was taken away the day before the performance! I discovered that it was not, but the pain that this caused was unfortunate. I am very sorry for Brooke -- and I am glad all is well now. Sometimes we all misunderstand what others are thinking or feeling and we assume the worst.

I pray that the Lord will open our eyes to those around us who might be feeling left out or rejected. Sometimes we can cause this feeling in others without even realizing it.

Dear Lysa,
my walk has been so challenged in the past few years and this was ever so comforting to my heart. I know that God never forgets me; it's always me that creates the distance when I feel like my life's challenges aren't important enough for God to help me. Thanks for the hug today. You are a blessing. : -)

thank you for posting - what a gentle reminder of God's faithfulness.

Oh, Lysa, so awesome. Don't you love it when God gives you those "teachable moments"??
