She Speaks 2008
If you are going to the She Speaks 2008 conference... here are some details just for you.

If you are not coming to She Speaks, I could still use your help with detail numbers one and four.

Detail number one:

Every year at She Speaks, the P31 team walks in to some hip, upbeat song to kick off the conference. While no one has yet mistaken us for contestants on "So you think you can Dance," we do have a lot of fun with this opening number.

I'm thinking several of you are great music minds.

You know... people who can recall the exact song title, group that sang it, what the album cover looked like, and the color of legwarmers the back up dancers wore. Yeah they can bring all that to mind while humming the exact tune of the chorus lines.

Do you know people like this?

Does this describe you?

I need your help.

I need a song. And a dance. But not like a flipping over onto your head break dance, dance. Just a fun, wave your hands in the air, get your blood pumping, walk in kind of dance.

But let's start with a song first. Any suggestions?

Detail number two:

If you are coming to She Speaks and you are a blogger, be sure to link to the Mr. Linky system below. I thought it would be fun for attendees to spend some time hopping around to each other's blogs before the conference.

Detail number three:

Big Mama is featuring business casual ideas on her Fashion Friday blog post this week.

Dress code for She Speaks is business casual. This does not mean you have to pull out your most high and tortuous heals to wear. Take it from someone who wound up with numb toes last year, you will do your fair share of walking. So, pack sensible shoes. You will thank me.

And check out Big Mama's suggestions. She will have some good ideas to help us look cute. And really when you gather that much estrogen under one roof, cute is fun.

Detail number four:

Our executive director, LeAnn, has had some strange things happen to her this week. A snake greeted her in her driveway the other night and then today at lunch she bit into her perfect looking apple only to discover it was completely rotten inside. We teased her that she better not start dressing in fig leaves.

Seriously, we have a sold out crowd of over 500 women coming to this year's conference. We know God has some amazing things in store for us all. So, we need people praying. And then praying some more. Thank you so much!

Detail number five:

Lisa over at Simply His Blogger has some great insights and interviews to help you prepare for She Speaks. Plus she also has a blog roll going of people who will be attending this year. Check her out.

And lastly, Shannon at Rocks in my Dryer is asking for your suggestions today regarding bloggy etiquette. You may want to head over there and post a comment... because really I think I have the most etiquette savvy readers around--- y'all are great.

And by the way, Sharon Sloan wants to know how many of us will be wearing the Denim duster from TJ Maxx that I mentioned my friend Meredith helped me buy. You know the $24.99 one that officially became my speaking uniform this spring. She's trying to figure out if we are going to have a Denim Duster reunion or just leave them all at home.

And technically that's 3 details crammed into detail number 5 but y'all are so nice, I can do that sort of thing.

This conference was one of those "things" I was compelled to attend, ya know? I couldn't not register when I read about it! Looking so forward to meeting ALL you girlie-Qs :)--SOON!!!

(Ummm, the overuse of exclamation points might be a small indicator...:) )

Songs...hmmm...I'm seeing this post in the middle of the night (insomnia hitting :/) and some i.n.t.e.r.e.s.t.i.n.g. songs are coming to mind:

"I'm Coming Out" ~ Diana Ross

"Whenever I See Your Smiling Face" ~ James Taylor

"Take You at Your Word" ~ Avalon

"Celebrate" ~ Kool & the Gang

"Average Girl" ~ Barlow Girl

Talk about an eclectic mix!

That song really gets you going!

The Lord has put LeAnn on my heart for months for prayers. Squeeze her for all of us attending and let her know we are praying!

Praying for all of you! And thank you to you and Holly for praying in the morning when you run!

Anyone who feels led...let's join in heart in prayer and fasting for His work to be accomplished through P31 and She Speaks...and prayer and fasting for LeAnn, Lysa, the P31 staff and volunteers and the She Speaks attendees. As God leads, join me in a time of prayer and fasting. As unto Him.

Lysa-sorry about the double entry in the blog list. Mr. Linky auto-filled for me and I didn't notice. #9 can be removed. Sorry, sorry, sorry!

I am excited about She Speaks too. And from my experience in ministry, those bad things seem to start happening when God is preparing to work. I'll be praying for LeAnn & the conference too.

See you there!

Hi Lisa
I will be attending the She Speaks Conference this year. I'm so thankful to the Lord for this opportunity. I will be there front and center pregnant belly and all absorbing everything.

My song suggestion is "Livin'" by the Clark Sisters. You can hear a sample of the song and read the lyrics at http://www.rhapsody.com/theclarksisters/liveonelasttime/livin/lyrics.html

See you in about 3 weeks.

I agree w/ cheryl--Baby Got Book would probably be hilarious.

Or something totally off-beat: Rock Lobster by the B52's. That had a unique easy dance--just lay on your back and do your hands like lobster claws--oh, ya'll are walking out...not workable with coming onstage...

Or We Got the Beat?

Or Walkin' On Sunshine?

Or how about Girls Just Wanna Have Fun?

I wouldn't suggest doing your hair in 80's Cyndi Lauper mode, but some tulle skirts and high top wrestling boots would certainly match the mood! (Yes, unfortunately, I'm one of those whose whole lives revolves around music, and can remember songs, year they came out, what I was wearing the first time I heard it...it's sad, really.)

Hey gal! I can't wait to see you and all the gals there. As for the dance-in I'd probably recommend something super awesome like a New Kids on the Block song. Hangin' Tough comes to mind. But there are so many wonders of musical genius in the NKOTB library that I would have a tough time choosing. And oh the dance moves we could do...I'm going to pull out my live concert VHS tape and practice just in case you need me. Now where did I pack my stone-washed jeans?

See ya there dear friend!

Lysa,
I had so desired to be one of the ladies attending this year. But it looks like the answer is "no". We have no extra money for me to attend this time. I kept praying for a miracle - but this hasn't happened. Sigh! My heart is heavy.

Even though I can not be there, I will be a prayer warrior for the weekend. I already have been praying for it. I attended for the first time last year and had a wonderful experience. God touched my heart in a special way. Because of attending I am now a volunteer with P31, even though it is a long distance volunteer. I haven't had any results with my writing yet, but pray that I will soon.

Dear Lord, I know that many lives will be touched in a special way that they will never forget. I pray for wisdom for the P31 leadership as well as the speakers. I pray that God's presence will be very real in that hotel. I pray that the P31 equipment will work as they compile materials and get things prepared. I pray that there won't be any technical glitches, and that all will go smoothly. I pray for unity among the women that are there. I pray for God's Spirit to descend in a mighty way. I pray that you encourage the women that have been facing discouragement and are questioning whether or not they should be a speaker, writer, ministry leader, or whatever it is that You are calling them to do. May they hear your still small voice and recognize it. I pray for traveling mercies. I pray that not one single lady will leave that conference without hearing from You personally Lord. May you give each of them what they need. Prepare the hearts of those who will be attending, and also those of us that desire to go, but couldn't this year. May we always be faithful to the calling that You have put on our lives. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.

Hope you all have a great time.

Blessings,
Pearls

I teach a dance aerobics class, so I have TONS of danceable, sometimes obscure songs for you. (I grew up a repressed Baptist. That's my excuse, anyway.)

Here's a fun one about turning the world UPSIDE DOWN...like the She Speaks ladies:

"Upside Down" by Jack Johnson (from the Curious George movie). Lyrics, please....

Who's to say
What's impossible
Well they forgot
This world keeps spinning
And with each new day
I can feel a change in everything
And as the surface breaks reflections fade
But in some ways they remain the same
And as my mind begins to spread its wings
There's no stopping curiosity

I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I'll find the things they say just can't be found
I'll share this love I find with everyone
We'll sing and dance to Mother Nature's songs
I don't want this feeling to go away

Blogger K. Langston said...

More lyrics from Upside Down:

Who's to say
I can't do everything
Well I can try
And as I roll along I begin to find
Things aren't always just what they seem

How about the song "Happy" by Ayiesha Woods? It has a great beat and the words would be perfect.
Looking forward to the weekend.

I am cracking up over the NKOTB suggestions -- fans are coming out of the woodwork!

I liked the suggestions "I like to move it - move it" from the movie and the other one I liked was "where ever we go - that's where the party's at."

I think with all these suggestions, you might just have to do a special P31 Party Mix and have snippets of songs. I might be able to help with that if you have songs in mind :)

Last one, sorry...Another for the SHE SPEAKS ladies...

LIVE OUT LOUD: Steven Curtis Chapman

(Wanna hear it? Here it go....)

Wake the neighbors
Get the word out
Come on, crank up the music, climb a mountain and shout
This is life we've been given, made to be lived out
So, la, la, la, la, live out loud

Think about this

If we really have been given the gift of life that will never end

And if we have been filled with living hope, we're gonna overflow

And if God's love is burning in our hearts, we're gonna glow

There's just no way to keep it in

LIVE OUT LOUD

Lysa,

I'm guessing y'all are planning some kind of name badges, but I had a thought...

What if you asked conference attendees to make their own badges? For bloggers, we could include a screen capture of our blogs or something, something that would help us "recognize" each other.

That might be a lame idea, but I'm one of the ones who doesn't really "know" the ladies (beyond Sophie and Shannon from having read their blogs a while, and a few new friends I've been reading since I found out they were attending). Or maybe, you could have a "contest" for wildest home-made name badge (most memorable??).

Ok...you've done this for years now...I'm sure you've thought of everything by now...just me and my random thoughts :).

Wave your hands in the air like you don´t care
Gilde by the people as they start to look and stare
Do your dance, do your dance, do your dance quick mamma
Come on baby tell me what´s the word

When you hear the call you´ve got to get it underway
Word up it´s the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you´ll be heard

Luann- the song you were thinking about is "Shout" by Tears for Fears, and, nope, the lyrics in the rest of the song aren't so appropriate! :)

LeAnn- I like "Shake Your Groove Thing", too! It's fun and clean. There is one line about "bumping booties", but that refers to the hip-bump we all did in the 70s, not anything questionable! Hey, we're celebrating abundance- why not do a-bun-dance? :)

OK, y'all don't wag your fingers at me for that!

Found a GREAT song for you guys! But it's probably too close to the conference for you to use it, so perhaps you can remember it for next year.

I had never heard it before until an NPR program about summer songs came on this morning. This was a Fifth Dimension song called "Stone Soul Picnic".

It's hard to explain it, but it's so breezy and uplifting and simple - like summer. And like Him.

Here's a link to a YouTube video of the group singing and swinging to the song - hey, they even have the motions all set for you! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5z9LYWywns&feature=related

Here are the lyrics...

Can you surry, can you picnic
Can you surry, can you picnic cmon cmon and
Surrey down to a stoned soul picnic
Surrey down to a stoned soul picnic
Therell be lots of time and wine

Red yellow honey sassafrass and moonshines
Red yellow honey sassafrass and moonshines

Stoned soul
Cmon cmon and

Surrey down to a stoned soul picnic
Surrey down to a stoned soul picnic
Rain and sun come in again

And from the sky come the lord and the lightning
And from the sky come the lord and the lightning

Stoned soul, surry on soul
Surry surry surry surry

Therell be trains of blossom
(therell be trains of blossom)
Therell be trains of music
(therell be music)
Therell be trains of trust
Trains of golden dust
Come along surry on sweet train of gold
Surry on down
Can you surry
Can you surry

Surry down to a stoned soul picnic
(can you surry, can you picnic)
