Bit by the decorating on a budget bug
It seems that several of us have been bit by the decorating on a budget bug this week. So, I thought it would be fun to do a little more show and tell. Be advised, I am no expert.

I am an amateur and a deal finder. Some of my ideas may go against every good and qualified decorator's advice. However, I do have fun finding cheap things and putting them to good use in a fun way.

And I figure since the Bible clearly says that the Proverbs 31 woman made coverings for her bed this is all quite Biblical... somehow.

A great starting place when seeking to decorate a space is to pick an object to serve as your color palette. It can be a piece of fabric, a rug, or even a floral arrangement.

Here is an arrangement that I used for the color palette for most of the downstairs of my home. I love the earthy tones mixed with splashes of red. I also love the interesting texture and pattern of the feathers.

I heart chunky accessory groupings. I got these three pieces for a great deal from Steinmart. I obviously like stores that end in the word "mart." Again, look at the floral arrangement in the photo above that serves as my color palette. Having those colors as my guide makes it easier to pick out accessories that work.

I also love to put things in my home that tell a story about my loved ones. My husband is an avid outdoorsman. I am prissy and can't understand his burning desire for dangerous adventure. But it is part of who he is and since I love him, I've decided to embrace things he likes.

It took some prayer ladies... just FYI.

Here we have one of his trophy mounts. Right beside it, I placed enlarged black and white photos of Art on one of his expeditions. The cool black distressed frames are straight from Walmart.

These pictures tell quite a story and I've grown to love seeing him telling all people of the testosterone variety his tales while standing in this part of our home.

Here's another thing that tells a story. In our den we have two handcrafted tables from the Adirondack Mountains. A friend of ours works at a family camp that we go to each year. He makes these tables and sells them to help support his family.

Not only are they beautiful but they are wonderfully unique with a story about where we spend part of our summer each year.

I've learned to not be afraid to add something a little funky here and there in my home. I got this chandelier at Lowes. It was the cheapest option.

So, to add a little spunk, I replaced the standard white shades with these red ones. Then in a crazy mess of hot glue and black craft feathers... wallah... Don't ask me how many times I burned myself and sent a red lamp shade flying across the room.

Remember the beauty of the unexpected. Things don't have to be matchy-matchy. My budget has never allowed me to walk into an expensive furniture store show case room and buy a complete set of furniture. I've collected pieces from here and there over the past 16 years. Part of the fun of decorating is finding things that look uniquely you.

In my dining room, I have quite the unexpected collection of furniture... but I love it. Remember the color palette from above to understand how all this works together. I found my china cabinet for a steal in the scratch and dent section of a discount furniture store. Because the piece is painted to look distressed, I couldn't find anything about this piece that looked damaged.

I found the black and brown woven chairs at a tent sale for $25 each. I love how unexpected they look at a traditional dining room table. At the end of each table I placed a pair of fabric covered chairs to give the set some bulk and again to tie in colors from my color palette.

And the wicker plate chargers? Walmart!

Lastly, don't sweat the small stuff... we all have unsightly stains on our carpets or crayon marks down the hall way... or piles that still need to be put up somewhere, sometime.

Sigh... will my work ever be done?

Happy decorating. Remember, wait for a good deal... collect things that look uniquely you over time... have fun... and post pictures for us to see when you complete a project.

Thank you for including the "real" photos at the end! I feel better.

Okay, well, I still feel a little bad about my husband's big stuffed fish hanging in the garage...so maybe I need to pray about that. Maybe I need to frame some pics of him fishing and hang them together...in the house.

Lysa, Thanks for sharing! I love your pile at the end of your stairs..we have that pile and the piles that are ON the stairs. For some reason no one can take something up when they go.
I love Southern Living at Home products and I have some of those, but it gets right expensive. I don't seem to be one of the lucky ones that can find awesome deals at places..or either I find them, but the budget just doesn't allow it even at a deal. My mother in law just refinished a small drop leaf end table for me that was her mothers. It looks great and I am happy to be able to use my husbands grandmothers table. Right now it is waiting for some company, its all alone on one side of the room.
I need to know how to post pictures. My pics are too big..is there a way to make them smaller for blogs??

I just posted a new blog carnival on my blog that was inspired by your makeovers. The theme is to blog about a room or project that's driving you crazy and prioritize it this week and post about how it went. I just wanted to invite any of your readers who have a room they need to organize to join in so we can cheer each other on. There's even a little bit of Starbucks included.

Lysa, thank you so much for being so honest. It's so reassuring to know that most women are just like me. Completely frustrated with their clutter and overjoyed to find something pretty at Walmart. I love reading your blog simply because you seem like someone I would be friends with.

You and I share the same decorating philosophy. I don't really ever want to be "finished" decorating my home. I want my home to reflect our lives (a little beat up, a little second-hand, a little eclectic) and to be filled with the beautiful and unusual things that we've come across along the way.

I love everything you've done. I'm impressed with how you incorporated the deer heads into your design. I think what it says is "Herein lives a woman who is flat out in love with her husband as is evidenced by the fact that she has deer heads on her walls."

Me again..I've learned how to add pictures now. It wasn't hard or scary!
I am participating in a carnival..visit my blog to find out what its all about!

You truly are a P31 woman - furnishing your home with rare and precious treasures! I LOVE your decorating. My problem is I find things I like...then don't know what to do with them. If I can copy an idea from a magazine that I like, I'm good, but I'm just not creative on my own.

Just want to add...what a difference a day can make. Yesterday I commented on your blog post how totally overwhelmed I was by ALL that had to be accomplished around my house. So...today...instead of being discouraged...when I arrived home from my violin lesson at 10:30 - I set to work. I cleaned 3 bathrooms, vacuumed, cleaned up the kitchen and did a little dusting and organizing. Feeling SO MUCH better. Now....heading in to work for 3pm and working until 9pm. Wait a minute....wasn't I already working???

Anyway...thanks for the inspiration.
Love & prayers,
Joy

Lysa, thanks for showing your stains. With 4 cats and 2 dogs (and 4 more when my grown children come for a visit), we have lots of stains! We are slowly replacing the carpet with laminate floors so they can be cleaned easier.

My husband and I so want to build a log cabin in the woods next to a lake, but alas, it's not within our finances. My alternative? I'm making a "log cabin" bedroom using log cabin wallpaper I found at Lowe's. We bought cots instead of beds, and instead of sheets and bedspreads we'll use sleeping bags. We bought kerosene lanterns and turned them into electric lights, and we're going to build a faux fireplace that will also hold a TV and DVR behind the chimney. I love the Adirondack table you have. I'll keep a lookout for those in my area (not likely in AZ). We're going to call this room Camp Run-Amuck.

A deer head would be a nice accent, but we don't have one - yet! I'm a hunter, and I love to see people's faces when I tell them - especially when I'm dressed in a suit at work! :)

Have a great day, Lysa, and thanks again for sharing your reality.

Hey Lysa! I love seeing the photos of your home!

I wanted to let you know that I've been reading your book about saying yes to God. I started it a long time ago but I am not the avid reader I wish I were.

Anyway, I picked it up again and this last chapter (#4) really touched me.

I want to be a women who says yes, and yet I remember feeling a little anxiety about it at first. This was because I was worried about failure. But you reminded me in this chapter of God's mercies... new EVERY morning... moment by moment... reaction by reaction... decision by decision.

Regardless of my reactions...good or bad, I can be a women who says yes to Him. I just need to be humble and ask for forgiveness. Praise God that He forgives and allows us to move on in pursuit of Him!

I could go on and on about the things I've gleaned from this book but I'll stop writing my "book" about your book!

Thanks for your love for Christ and letting us share in your journey!

I hope to meet you in June at the conference...I can't believe it's just a little over 1 month away!!!! :)

God bless!!!!

My husband and I LOVE bargains!! We had been searching for a year, (yes, I said a YEAR)for an entertainment armoire. Not just any old one...it had to be the right one at the right price. You know, just a notch or so above *FREE*. Anyway, after our REALLY long wait, we found one online someone was selling for only $40.00! We had to drive about 35 miles to get it, But, Oh what joy we had when we saw it! It was perfect and for sure perfectly priced within our budget. Just goes to show, if you wait patiently, God does have what you're looking for! Especially when you are trying to be good stewards of the money He has blessed you with. I was even inspired enough to write an article about that armoire on my blog. Of course, I found a spiritual lesson in it. (he!!he!)
You can read it here: http://www.freewebs.com/thresholdsdevotionsandbiblestudy

Your home is lovely! Thanks for sharing and I can't wait for the She Speaks Conference!! Hope I get to meet you there!
Love and Blessings,

Thanks again Lysa. The things I love the most are things I have taken a chance on and came from Steinmart, Target, Walmart or Kirkland's. (gotta get your coupon online, I get one every week from there).

I am amazed at my friend's home who look like they have spent an arm and a leg, only to find out that they only spent a 1990's tank of gas.

Lysa, Thanks for sharing the decorating tips and the real life part of your home. I don't feel so bad about the stacks in my bedroom, living room and office-wow when I see it in writing it sounds/looks bad. I renovated last year and haven't managed to get it all put up or thrown out and am having trouble deciding which is which-LOL!

I love your bedroom makeover. And why oh why didn't I buy stock in Wal-Mart years ago-LOL! My house sits half-way between a Wal-Mart and a Target-both less than a mile away, that gets me in big trouble.

Thanks for your insight. Blessings, Roxie

Lysa, could you tell me the paint color/brand on the wall where your feathery arrangement is? I love that shade! By the way, you would be a great interior designer in my opinion.
