There were several factors playing into this.
She has had a hard time battling back from the shoulder injury that caused her to miss her big final meet for this season. Her best friend and team mate decided to transition to competitive cheerleading. And turning 13 this month, she is becoming increasingly aware of the social opportunities she sometimes has to miss because of her strict training schedule.
To be honest when she told me she wanted to quit, a part of me was happy.
Gymnastics is time consuming and expensive. Not to mention what it does to this mother's heart when I see her miss a connection and fly off a piece of equipment knowing the landing will hurt.
But a part of me was sad too.
She has always had the goal in mind of shooting for a college scholarship. It's been something she's talked about since she was little. Plus, unlike her mama, she is a great athlete that needs a lot of physical activity.
I've always told Ashley that to stay in gymnastics she had to want it for herself and that I would never push her. But I also believe that sometimes kids do no have the maturity to make decisions that will affect them down the road so as parents we do have to help navigate them.
It is a balancing act, is it not?
So, when she informed Art and me that she was ready to quit, we told her this could not be a snap decision and that she would not be allowed to jump right into cheerleading with her best friend. We would require her to take six months off from doing any sport to regroup. We also told her that she needed to pray about this decision before she quit and that we would be praying as well.
And pray I did.
I prayed that God would give me wisdom to see His perfect plan for this decision.
Two days later, we were out at a restaurant eating dinner. Across the room we spotted a girl that used to be at Ashley's gym. She had graduated and gotten a full scholarship to Michigan State University. When she saw us, she came over to our table to say hi and ask about Ashley.
We told her of Ashley's struggles right now with gymnastics.
Then the idea popped into my head to ask her if she would take Ashley out to dinner one day and talk with her. Not to talk her into staying with gymnastics but to talk to her about coming back from an injury, and making the decision to stick with it even when your friends quit. I also wanted her to be honest with Ashley about the sacrifices she made sticking with it all the way through college and whether or not those sacrifices were worth it.
Two days later, Ashley came home from meeting with the collegiate gymnast with a fresh vision and renewed commitment. Not only does she not want to quit but she wants to one day go to Michigan State.
Who knows what the future holds. But isn't it a beautiful lesson on the power of prayer?
I had specifically asked God to give me wisdom to know how to help Ashley navigate this decision and then we run into the very person who she needed to talk with.
Coincidence? I don't think so.

What a great lesson for Ashley too! That when we seek God or His plan or His wisdom or His guidance He will Come! He may not not speak to us directly but He WILL send the person we do need to talk with.
We call that a Godincidence.
Blessings,
Jennifer
God is so good! With Ashley turning 13 I am sure she will have all sorts of ideas and thoughts about her future during these delicate years..but with great, Godly parents such as you guys, she'll do great!
Blessings~

Hi Lysa... I'm so impressed how you, your husband and daughter handled this. To give this over to God and let Him have His way in the decision is awesome. Seriously, how often do we pray about the injury in the sport, but don't really pray about if we should even be competing? The teenage years can be so challenging... I hope Ashley does make it to MSU, we have one daughter who just completed her junior year there and another daughter heading there in the fall!
Thanks for the great blog!
It is decisions like this that allow you to disciple her in how to invite God into all of the decisions in your life. While many good-intending parents would immediately try to manipulate the situation to get the decision they want, you stepped back and allowed God to move. Now, not only is she sticking with it, but her heart is in it and most importantly, her heart is turned toward God!
Those kind of decisions are so hard but God is so good. He always sends just the right person or circumstance to "enlighten" us to His ways.
God is good!!

That's a wonderful God appointment! It is so good as a child to have to demonstrate commitment and discipline with something, and it is sad to quit before you've seen the fruits. But I know what you mean about being so busy! So it's great that you could leave it to God!

I live in Lansing, home of Michigan State University!! We'd love to have Ashley in our community. :)
How great of God to create chance meetings, with just the right person to give Ashley insight and a vision again.

wow...thanks for this post! I'm at a place in life where my kids are still so young. However, I dread the years where they will be involved...money and time is not something I'm excited about. I've had a negative attitude about such things lately, thinking that God would never want us to do such things..or that it really doesn't matter to Him. However, your post spoke to me. That yes, God could have a specific plan regarding the activities our kids are involved with.
I need to pray about the decision I am going to make regarding my kids activities. Please don't get me wrong...I don't think activities are wrong or evil...I was involved galore...cheerleading, band, student council, you name. However, I guess my fear comes more in the area of a new transistion in life...and how will I ever juggle the active lives of 4 kids.
If Lysa Terkeurst can do it...so can I!;)
that's it for my rambling post!;)
Gosh, Lysa. Thank you so much for sharing Ashley's gymnastics journey. These are bits of wisdom and reminders of God's faithfulness that I am hiding in my heart as I sit here typing with my 8 mo old on my lap. God bless you and that sweet family!
Great story!
I would however like to add my 2 cents worth about cheerleading. My daughter is 17 and graduating in a few weeks. She was a cheerleader and on squads that competed, since the seventh grade. For me, for us, if I had it to do over again, I would steer her away from it. As a parent it was the most drama-filled, frustrating, expensive thing she could have done. (I'd be happy to go into more detail elsewhere if someone has questions. This is not Lysa or Ashley's story.)
That said, Good Luck to her! God has a knack for putting the right people in the right places, doesn't he?
Two things that really stand out in this Lysa. The six months wait is wise. And praying for our kids for every choice and for guidance.
You rock as a mom, and also as a friend. I look forward to seeing you and your wonderful team in June!
I'm always afraid I am not going to have the wisdom I need for my kids when they get older and are facing these kind of things. Your phrase "wisdom-based parenting" keeps running through my head. I'm praying that God will give me wisdom like this for situations like this when our issues get bigger than the current Kindergarten ones.
Love,
Becky A.
Great story! My niece did competitive gymnastics for many years but quit during her sophomore year. She took up diving and now has a scholarship to Michigan State University as well. I hope her and your daughters friend can meet up, my niece could use some more "positive influence" in her life. (BTW my nieces name is Ashley definetely some weird parallels in this story :)

Helping my daughter navigate through life is a delicate balancing I have just begun - she's 4. Your story is a wonderful example of what God will do for us as parents and for our children when we pray and seek His guidance. Thanks for sharing.
So great to have visiov at a young age. Good job mom! (For anyone reading this, Lysa is not my mom. But you probably figured that out!) :)
Power of prayer...nothin' like it!
I love this Lysa!!!
I love that our BIG GOD that not only spoke the stars into existence...(Check out "Louie Gigilio" for this...awesome message from Chris Tomlin's How Great is Our God Tour!!!!!)...but this same loving Father helps me find my car keys many times per week!
How wonderful that this same GOD answered your precious Mommy prayer for your little girl....in such a powerful way that not only helped her to find HIS perfect will for her life...but also...grew her & your faith immeasurably, I am sure!
I have been playing catch up with your posts...so...I have to tell you...I LOVE the new bedroom...and all of your wonderful decorating ideas!!! They are beautiful!!!
I like the warm hues too...our entire home (except for Chelsi's parts...) is warm browns and deep reds..some dark brown/greens....and a little bit of black splashed in here and there...Love the warmness of those colors!!!
Also, while I am on a roll....playing catch up...YIKES...a tick??? Oh dear! I would have done the very same thing..google every possible thing that could or could not happen from the encounter! *wink*
And...lastly...I love the Big 80's hair...I had the same big ole hair...and I loved it back then too (I am older than you by a year or two)... I adore your new look too, very pretty!!!
Have a most blessed day sweet friend!
You are a blessing...always!!! I love reading your words......I can just hear your sweet, fun voice as I read your posts! You are precious!!!
Hugs!

Great God story. I just love how God is concerned about every detail of all our lives and orchestrates meetings, timing, people, circumstances for His purposes.
Yesterday I found out the Christian bookstore where I work will be closing, and by mid August my job will be gone. This morning my devotional reading for the day spoke specifically about God being the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and End. The end of one journey is a hand-engraved invitation to a new beginning. The closing thoughts read, "You and I will never move to the next level with God if we're scared half to death of what awaits us. On this mysterious pilgrimage we will find that when we do meet difficulties and sorrows, they were not meant to stop us but to form the character required for our great harvest in the coming season. Step into your future, Precious One. Something wonderful awaits you." Beth Moore
I went to bed last night asking God to speak to my heart about what lay ahead, and His Words spoke specifically to my situation. The concluding verse was Jeremiah 29:11.
Coincidence? I don't think so!
He works all things out for good for those that love him!
I don't believe anything is a coincidence either! :)
Love this story and how God weaves every little detail into our lives, right down to "chance" encounters at restaurants!
It's such fun to see God-incidences!
wow!! I loved how you handled that. Too often we let our kids just quit. I run a dance team and this is a frustration I run into constantly. When dance conflicts with their social life or they get tired they just quit and then want to come back a month or two later and that is hard on me as a leader. What great wisdom you posses as a parent
Good for you for praying.
Michigan State. Good school. Long way from NC, though, for mama!
What a neat story!
Great story! Thanks for sharing!
One of my favorite verses is in Psalm 138:8 and I've prayed in many times for my children when I had concerns. "The Lord will perfect that which concerns me."
I think it's awesome that God cares so much about every detail of our lives and He tells us to ask for wisdom and He'll give it to us.
Another verse I have prayed so much for my kids is in Isaiah 42:16 NIV.
God is good!
I'm so happy the young lady was there at that appointed time for Ashley.
Your post almost made me cry! Praise God, He is so good. You are so encouraging. Even though I am already technically an adult (28 & holding) I want to be like you when I grow up. (Cheesy to say, yes, but you moonwalk in Walmart, so I figure you might appreciate it.) :) God bless you!!
I love that story!! It's such an awesome testimony to God's presence in our lives!! Yeaayy!!
I call that a "God Stop" story. I love to hear all the ways he shows up in our lives. Thanks for sharing that.
Ericka
What a wonderful testimony - for you and your sweet girl. AND I'm also guessing for the girl who agreed to meet with her!! that just reminds me how important it is for young women to slow down long enough to realize there are young ones behind them who will respond to their influence.
I am so happy this worked out for our entire family...to God's Glory!
Lisa
It's so neat when God answers in such a clear way. Excited to see what He has planned for Ashley and her gymnastics next year!
You're a great, wise mom Lysa!!
Hi Lysa! Not sure if I've commented on your blog yet, but I read it regularly! It's one of my favs. I love this story about finding God's plan for your daughter. I just started my blog and have a post about my oldest daughter's struggles over the past year and finding the plan of God for her life.
Also...my sister seems to have a unique way of "book clubbing". God leads her to many books, then she passes them on to me. In turn, God always points me to someone else to send them to.
I've just realized today that two of those books that I have read (like over a year ago) are yours...Capture His (Her) Heart. Kinda' cool that I've fallen in love with your blog and then realized you were the author of these books...He did something similiar with one of Beth Moore's books.
Keep those uplifting blogs comin'.

I call those Godcidences!
Lysa--
You just tell Miss Ashley that Mackenzie and her family are big Michigan State Spartan fans who live 25 minutes from campus---- so if God orchestrates her coming up here, she can crash at our house for the weekends, bring her laundry and eat our food. Shoot, I'll even learn how to brew some Southern sweet tea. However, we will also introduce her to some good ole' midwestern fair too--Milwaukee brats, Chicago style pizza and my Michigan dried cherry cookies! That way, one of your girls can stay at my house for a while instead of the other way around!! (Which remeinds me, Kenzie's ticket was able to be switched. You can keep her til the Thursday after She Speaks for work, play or both!)
Bless you!
Karen
I too was a bit worried she was considering quitting...then as I read on I was very, very happy to see she didn't want to give up on her dream. Maybe we'll see her on Big Ten Network! (PSU fans here!!)
We had our share of "Godcidences" this weekend and shared them with family at PSU graduation. The funniest one was in the car and my husband needed sunglasses and realized he had left them at home. He borrowed our 21 yr olds and simultainiously as soon as they were placed on his face the radio hit into "Dude looks like a lady" We howled!!! He took it well. :) Have a great day!
Thank you Susan for giving me an "in" word to use...people always look at me funny when I tell my "stories". I'm getting better.
Definitely the power of prayer!!!
I am so glad Ashley has you for a mother and not me. If she had me for a mother she probably would have never been allowed to "think" back flip, much less do one. You are a mighty brave woman and she was placed into the right momma arms. I am praying for her. Praying that not one of her bones will be broken and that she'll be renewed with strength and that she'll soar with wings of eagles.
