Truth and nothing but...please
Recently I got a call from a friend asking me about the latest and greatest spiritual rage, "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. Yes, this is the same "awakening guide" that Oprah is now promoting and teaching. And yes, this is the same stuff that has Christians everywhere forwarding link upon link to their friends outraged by the heresy wrapped in these teachings.

More than just forwarding links and saying it is wrong, I think we Christians need to know how to give an intelligent and ready answer. I am no expert on Apologetics. However, I am a woman who has experienced the truth of Jesus in my life and feel very passionate about debunking untruths that will confuse at best and destroy at worst.

My friend asking about Tolle's book is seeking spiritual things but has not yet professed Jesus as her Savior.

She processes my relationship with the Lord by seeing me as a deeply "spiritual" person and just assumed I would love the fact that she was reading this "spiritual" book.

Instead of immediately launching into my diatribe about why this book is not what she should be reading, I asked her a simple question, "So, what do you think about it?"

She sighed and said she found the book to be confusing and exhausting. A more perfect description of what happens to a person reading man-made, human contrived, supposed enlightenment, could not be found. On this point she is dead on.

I explained that frustration will always be the result when trying to find enlightenment outside of the solid truth of God's word. It would be like putting a cup of dirt on your kitchen table and being told that you could produce a flower just from this dirt if only your mind could graduate past the flat realities of this world and into a more enlightened state. If only you could still your soul just enough and transcend past the natural order of things, you can bring something glorious from nothing at all.

Here is a direct quote from "A New Earth" by Tolle, "Using the word 'enlightenment' in a wider sense than the conventionally accepted one, we could look upon flowers as the enlightenment of plants. Any life-form in any realm- mineral, vegetable, animal, or human- can be said to undergo 'enlightenment.' It is, however, an extremely rare occurrence since it is more than an evolutionary progression: It implies a discontinuity in its development, a leap to an entirely different level of Being and, most important, a lessening of materiality."

He goes on to say that Jesus was an early flower of humanity whose message could not be widespread and could not transform human behavior except in a small minority of people.

Hmmmm.... Really Mr. Tolle? As a human I know several things beyond a shadow of your doubtful teaching:

* I could strain with all the upper consciousness that my spirit could ever hope to graduate to and no flower will ever appear from a cup of only dirt. My efforts would be better placed to use my energy and common sense to go get a seed, push it down into the dirt, apply the right amount of sunshine and water... and then and only then would a flower have the chance of appearing.

* Secondly, I know your book, has sold really well. However, it pales in comparison to the sales of the best selling book of all time, "God's Holy Bible." Combined with the fact that Jesus lived 2000 years ago and still profoundly affects millions of people, I would say that pretty much debunks the theory that Jesus' message is not widespread. I wonder if 2000 years from now, anyone will even know the name of Eckhart Tolle???

* Finally, to say that Jesus only affected the behavior of a small minority of people is not only not true but it totally misses the beauty of the reality of Jesus. He did not come to just change people's behavior. That would just rearrange a person's exterior. Jesus' teachings are able to transform a person from the inside out. Not to just help them be better people but to give them the promise of eternity.

1 Timothy 6: 3-5 says, "If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain."

Bloggy Friends I know this is heavy stuff for a Monday morning. However, I feel a great sense of responsibility to know how to defend my faith. If you found this helpful, let me know. I plan to post more about how to answer people asking about this book with the solid truth of God.

On a lighter note... the winner of the cupcake star tins giveaway is...

Jennifer who wrote a comment so funny I literally doubled over laughing!!!

"...I eagerly offered to make the cupcakes for my two year old daughter's preschool class (I really just wanted to show off my cute new pampered chef cupcake carrier thingy) Anyway, I went to the grocery store and searched high and low for my special ingredients (the box of instant mix). They had muffin mix, brownie mix, cake mix, lemon bar mix... Who knew there was no such thing as "Cupcake" mix? Have a good weekend, Jennifer"

Sweet, sweet Jennifer... e-mail me at Lysa1@Proverbs31.org and let me know where to send your prize.

Have a truth-filled happy Monday everyone!

Lysa, I really got a lot out of this blog. I need to know how to defend my faith more. I may not have all the proper words to say, but what I do know is that Jesus has changed me. He's made me happy, healthy and whole. His Word keeps me clean and sober. I need to learn more, but right now, all I have is a changed life.

I'm new to the blogging scene. I get so much out of your blogs. THanks!!

Lysa - I really appreciate this post. I went to Summit after graduating from high school (a seminar in Colorado where you learn how to defend the Christian faith). It was incredible!!

Since then, I've been interested in apologetics but need to study up more. It is good to think about these things and be informed so we can more effectively witness. Thanks Lysa!

LOL I can relate to the cupmake mix incident!!!

Haven't been "here" much in the last week with the new baby...but I have been reading the posts. I have never been an Oprah watcher, and I don't think my friends watch it much either (or if they do, they don't mention it). But, I do have friends who haven't been saved and ask me questions from the world view. I found your rebuttal helpful and I do think it will help me when I'm called in the future to account for my belief.

Thanks Lysa, well said. Our pastor has referenced Oprah and this book a few times in the last month and you hit the nail on the head.

I will be forwarding this blog entry to a few of my friends and family!

Well done, Lysa.

Though I am concerned with this book being embraced by unbelievers, it bothers me even more to hear professing Christians being sucked in to it.

In the library the other day, I heard two women say how they couldn't wait to get this book 'because Oprah LOVES it' in the same paragraph in which they'd just mentioned how wonderful their Sunday morning sermon had been the day before.

Are we really so gullible? So groundless?

Thanks for being a role model in the Lord. And I am going to order your book asap about being drained for my unsaved sis and SIL. You are AWESOME! (Those star cupcakes rock too!) God bless.

Lysa: Keeping the Word of God pure is never too "heavy" for a Monday morning or any time! Thank you for sharing this post.

1 Th. 5 tells us to "test everything...hold on to good...avoid all kind of evil". Psalm 119 is a beautiful Psalm about God's Word, and obeying Him pure and simple.

He will bless you as you honor Him by keeping His Word pure. Thank you! :)

Great to see you in Pennsylvania this weekend, friend! God used you to minister to all of us ladies! :)

You go girl! Our pastor is doing a series on this very thing right now. We (Christians) MUST know what we believe, but not only that, we MUST know why we believe it. There are far too many lies out there for us to continue to only warm the pews of our churches. Jesus didn't call us to be passive Christians, but to be active in sharing the TRUTH of who He is.

Thanks so much for sharing your heart on this. Looking forward to reading more.

Have a blessed day!

Thank you for standing on the truth. We (Christian's) need to know there is a spiritual warfare going on and much needs to be done to defend our faith.

Once again, you have done an amazing job. You have such a gift, Lysa. This was definitely helpful to me, and I'm sure to every reader. I'd love to read more!

Lysa, I loved the cup of dirt analogy. I have posted on this subject a couple of times, basing my reactions to Tolle on Jesus' admonition to be shrewd as snakes but gentle as doves. The thing is, Jesus will always be the stumbling block in any discussion of spirituality, and we should not be surprised by that. His very name arouses all kinds of reactions, as most lately witnessed in popular culture by the American Idol "Shout to the Lord" waffling on whether to include his name in a SONG ABOUT HIM! Remember how our Lord plainly reminded us that "Their [speaking of false prophets]impressive credentials and dazzling performances will pull the wool over the eyes of even those who ought to know better. But I've given you fair warning" (Message Matt. 24:23-25). The "elect" are being fooled. If you'd like to read my post on this, it's at: http://2nd-cup-of-coffee.blogspot.com/2008/03/oprah-hearts-eckhart.html. Thanks for speaking out about this.

Thank you for this post...first of all, I debated to answer since I have never seen Oprah's show, and truefully have no desire to plus since I know many who do watch her and seem to idolize her this post may very well come in handy in the future. I am uneducated on this particular book but know I will handle any situation that may come up being secure in God's grace and guided along by his helper the Holy Spirit. When I was depressed years ago I searched and searched for reasons and answers in the field of psychology and self-help books...real life began for me when I began a deeper and more intimate relationship with Christ. God's word suddenly came to life for me and became a renewed source of strength! It amazes me daily how well I have curbed my tongue and at the same time given forth love and hope to others, all through gaining knowledge on God's love for all. Thank you again for educating me on something I knew nothing about.

I have been dismayed to have friends who are professing Christians say they are reading Tolle's book. Just because Oprah recommended it. Thanks for the sharing this great response. I don't want to read the book, but I want to be able to walk in love as I discuss it.

Say it sister! I have only "heard" a little about this New Age stuff..I tend to just ignore a lot of it, but as Christians we REALLY need to know what is being said, written and taught out there...for our children's sakes! We must defend ourselves, our beliefs, and our Savior with scripture. You've motivated me to dig deeper in God's Word!
As far as sweet Jennifer..poor thing..that is a funny story! I think that one did top them all!

I am with you on that one! So keep it coming. We are called to equip ourselves and this is just the things that will only cause damage in our society.
Blessing in this Lysa. We are with you.

I agree we need to know how to respond about our faith and false teaching of others. It just takes practice to get comfortable doing it. One IMPORTANT note, however. The bible says it best - 1 Peter 3:15 - "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."

ALWAYS be prepared to answer, but do it with GENTLENESS and RESPECT.

Oh, yes, yes, yes to the question of did we find this info helpful. Thank you so much for posting this! We all need to know how to "gently" defend our faith. I recently took one morning in the ladies Sunday school class I teach and dealt with the radio program "A Course in Miracles" that airs daily on the Oprah XM satellite network. It is New Age teachings with just enough talk about God and the Holy Spirit to make people think it is a Christian thing.....even some weak or new Christians who have not become grounded in the faith.
So Lysa.....thank you for taking a stand on the truth today! It was a wonderful way to start off my Monday by reading this!

God bless you!

I just want to expand on my earlier comment. While we need to answer those who are confusing by false teaching gently, the false teachers do not get that same gentleness. I don't want anyone to misconstrue my earlier remarks to mean Lysa should have been gentle to Mr. Tolle. Only to her friend, whom she did respond ever so gently too.

Thanks for the chance to expand. My 4 yr old was screeching for me when I typed my earlier response and I quickly hit send to get to her. When I re-read it, it could have come across as a chastisement, which is SO wasn't.

Great great words, Lysa. And wouldn't Tolle, Oprah, & their followers be surprised & even dismayed to know that they were actually mentioned in II Timothy 4:3?! For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

And P.S. About Jennifer....Poor gal - That is hilarious!!

Blogger Jai said...

Thank you Lysa. We HAVE to KNOW what the Bible says before we can defend our faith no matter who the false teacher is.

Oprah has such a huge following and it is so scary to see so many believers falling away from God's truth just because Tolle's words SOUND good to the ear. (Not to me, but you know what I mean)

Sometimes I hear people say they don't like the BAD stuff of being a Christian or that they don't understand why God allows bad things. This kinda "junk" thinking is sucking those people and other in so easily.

As believers we MUST get on our knees and stay in prayer. We cannot lean to our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5,6

We need to pray for clarity as we read God's truth and discernment when it comes to responding to people who have no problem spreading this "gospel".

At a family dinner just yesterday there was discussion about Oprah and her Book Study. Although none of our family has read this book we discussed Oprah's declaration that she is a christian and yet sooooo much of what she says leaves you wondering....yes, that is between her and the Lord.

If only all of these people would put "The New Earth" book down and pick up their Bibles what a transformation we would see.

Thanks for your insight and I said a prayer for your friend that her heart would hear only the TRUTH!!

Have a blessed day as you have blessed me.

Thank-you so much for writing this! Your thoughts on the matter definitely help. I have been so concerned about the impact of this book and Oprah's promotion of it. I totally agree with you on this one, Lysa.

Blogger Joyful said...

Lysa this is excellent! Thank you for sharing.

Your friends response to your question - saying this book has left her confused - echoed a truth from Scripture. 1 Corinthians 14:33 says, "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace". God's Word brings light, not confusion.

Also, Galatians 1:6-7 says, "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ."

God's Word warns about false teachers. Thank you for taking a stand and holding firm to the Word of truth. Titus 1:9, "He (she) must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he (she)can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it."

Thank you for encouraging us. Looking forward to reading more of God's heart on this in your posts.
Blessings,

Thank you for a fresh, Christian perspective on the current trend. I have received the links for the "Church of Oprah" from friends far and wide but the funny thing is, my filter will never let me see the actual footage!!! Lysa,
I was so glad to see you posting about this today. My heart has been heavy about this issue for awhile now.

Oprah has such a huge platform to teach from, and her audience tends to be women. I feel a passion for women's ministry, and it breaks my heart to think of the numbers of hurting, searching women who are reading this book and participating in the daily lessons on Oprah's website called "A Course in Miracles."

I've watched some Christian responses that are angry and passionate, and although a righteous anger toward the spread of lies about Jesus is good, I think we need a more effective response. One of love and one that keeps pointing people to truth and Jesus. You did a great job.

The Bible Study that I lead has been going through the book of Colossians and Chapter 2 is about false teaching. We've spent a lot of time praying for the thousands of people who will be affected by Oprah's false teaching. I pray that God will use this for His glory and turn around what Satan has intended for evil and make it for good. Thanks for the post today!

BTW- On a lighter note, bloggygiveaways.com (used to be run by Shannon at rocks in my dryer) is having a super fun blog carnival this week where bloggers are giving a ton of fun things away. I had a great time coming up with my own post and signing up for some of the other giveaways. Just thought you might want to participate. : )

I'm SO sorry that this comment turned into a book. : )

Have a great day!

I think that this book by Tolle is doing a great work for Christ. Just like you saying you want to be ready to contend for your faith, it is bringing other Christians to that point as well. When someone challenges our faith, it causes Christians who would otherwise remain "silent in their sameness" (ie sit on their laurels) to rise up and defend what they believe.
Like the Da Vinci code, Tolle is doing great things for the cause of Christ without even meaning to. Only God could make that happen!

Good post. My husband is the one in our family who could write a book on Truth and what isn't. I'm the type who prays hard when I am presented with a moment to encourage someone in the quest to fill the void. I just recently heard about that book. It would be good to stir us all to "know" what we believe.

Blogger tiggerdaisy said...

Lysa,
I, too, think we should defend our faith and debunk the myths of this New Age speak-easy. I think we should be armed and ready to defend our beliefs...defend who Jesus is and what He means to us. Your message today was wonderful!

I also believe though that Christians should not watch Oprah, not read her magazine, not buy in to the "Big Give Away," etc. I don't think of it as a boycott, but rather not letting any of her ideas seep into my life and compromise any of my beliefs. In addition, when we partake of what she has to offer, it's as if we are supporting her. And I don't think we should. It's like saying we will eat at a casino but won't gamble because we don't believe in it. Yet we will spend our money on food, shops inside the casino, shows at the casino, etc. If you partake of those things, then you are in effect supporting the casino industry. Those are my feelings though...I do understand that there are those who would disagree with me and that's fine. I stand on what I believe and what God has told me to do and not to do...and I realize that not be the same for everybody. I accept that. But these are my thoughts.

I'm so glad Lelia posted! Please go to her website and watch that link! The one thing I liked about that clip was where Oprah said that Jesus is not the only way...that she did not believe that. Well, if Oprah does not believe in that, then she is not a Christian, as that is a core belief of being a Christian.

Lysa, one final thought. I know that you have been on the Oprah show and probably have another opportunity to do so in the future since they've contacted you recently about a possible update on the adoption. Personally, I don't really agree with it since she is so New-agish. HOWEVER, my mother-in-law said something very intersting the other night. She said that you could be appointed to be there to witness to Oprah. That you could be a light piercing into the darkness for both Oprah and her fans. And I agree with that wholeheartedly!!!

I loved your post this morning and I look forward to hearing more about this topic. Like Lelia, I don't know if I should read these kinds books or wait for others to debunk them and use their material. hmmmm...I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Pardon me for any grammatical errors...I'm typing rather fast and don't have time to spell check! :)

Prayers and Blessings!

Hi Lysa-
This is the first time that I have ever commented on a blog posting of any sort. I was so compelled by what you wrote, the passion in the words and thankful to find this issue addressed by someone I've come to respect. I must confess that I actually bought the book several weeks ago, but haven't been able to open and read it. I have been pondering all the questions in my mind that you spoke of today. I didn't know who to ask about combining this book with my true belief in Jesus Christ. I am really looking forward to hearing more thoughts about this, and I too would love to know how to explain my beliefs to others. I don't know if this is making any sense. I am so thankful that you posted on this issue and I thank you for sharing your thoughts in such an honest way.
Blessings to you.

Lysa - this is why I appreciate your blog so much. You hit on topics that are relevant to today's culture. I appreciate and want more of the "heaviness" because it gives me the ability to chew over things I maybe wouldn't have thought about before. And absolutely - we all need to know how to verbally defend our faith! It is not enough to just let people know we are Christians by our actions, it is essential to know how to speak about our faith.

Lysa! Thank you for your comments on this topic! My heart has been heavy over it! I'm glad you gave me a "heads up" on how to handle it should anyone ask me/or comment to me about it. I'm surprised that Christians would be involved. The minute I saw the book - I knew to stay far away! I only go to the Bible to find my purpose!! Love, Yoli

Lysa~

Your answer revealed both grace and truth. I hope that I can defend my faith with such simple eloquence. I am deeply alarmed by the phenomenon of Christians who are flocking to books like this one and others like "The Secret."

We need to be well grounded, not just so that we can have discernment, but so that we can minister to those who are confused!

I look forward to hearing more from you...and I've been challenged to dig deeper myself.

Thanks! Happy Monday!

Thanks for sharing, Lysa. It's a shame that Oprah, who has done so many good things for people, does not realize that the only way to Heaven is through Christ. All her good works will have meant nothing; unfortunately, all her good works have afforded her a huge following that she is currently leading astray - truly a shame.

I stumbled on your blog through the Proverbs ministries somehow and am so glad I did. A friend who I used to consider a friend in faith has got swept into a whole bunch of mind stuff including the Secret and this New Earth book and I watch her drifting further away. Last week I was mad/sad/lonely thinking God had taken my friend away again and then Sunday morning I woke up with God in my mind telling me For He so loves ME, a definite reassurance. SO thank you that at the time I needed it most that you listen to God urging you to comment on this book because you just gave me the gift of peace and reassurance that I am not wrong being wary of the things that are pulling her away.

Too heavy for Monday? NO WAY. You lit a fire in me and I am sure in may others!!! Thank you so much for this blog, for your encouragement and grounding. I felt like I was at an event you were speaking, actually hearing you teach/preach. Fabulous, sister! I have forwarded this blog to a ton of people already, giving them the links back to your blog. I have also emailed one of our Pastors on this topic, suggesting that they address this book and debunk the lies. I have never read the book. I have seen a few clips where people talk about it and how it gave them so much clarity. What was quoted from the book made absolutely no sense to me. I felt like I was hearing someone from the 60's who took too much of something. There was nothing clear about it. I believe this Tolle guy was a smart man. Oprah was crazy about "The Secret" as well. He took it to another level and got her to do an entire study on this book. Imagine if Oprah would do an online Bible Study?

I agree with the earlier post. Lysa, you have already had contact with Oprah and you may have the opportunity again. If that happens, I believe that God will use you as a tool to reach her.

Thank you for your wisdom.

With all of God's Love! Have a blessed week.

Thank you Lysa for sharing your heart and God's Truth.

I think one of the main problems with so many is that, We are still so much of this World and not just in it.

I will continue praying for you and this ministry to reach more people than OPRAH!!!

God Bless

Lysa,
Thanks for talking about this. I tackled this the other day on my blog, but I think your words are much more eloquent!!!

Thank you so much for this post.
I am very interested in knowing more about the whys and hows of the book. Just telling people "this is not a good book" doesn't do a whole lot. I would love to be able to tell them why I feel that way.

Blogger Halfmoon Girl said...

good thoughts here- we need to have an answer for those around us. When I watched the email warning last week, I was convicted to pray for this influential lady. Can you imagine how awesome it would be if she used her influence for the Lord?!

Blogger Carol said...

This was very good. There are so many people out there searching and unfortunately, they get sucked in to this kind of thing. It is outrageous.

This is all the more reason for we Christian ladies to get out there are represent Christ. I don't mean take your Bible to Kroger and thump people as you walk down the aisle. I mean showing kindness to everybody, everywhere, even when you don't feel like it and are in a hurry. I mean inviting people to church with you. I mean reaching out to those around us who are hurting. Jesus is the only way. period. But how will all those searching people know if we don't share Him with them?

Thanks for posting on this.

I recall the very same feeling when the DaVinci Code came out. I had the same feeling - people telling me they were reading it because they somehow thought that reading it was like learning about God. Even in just the few years since then I think my approach would be different. I am the kind of person that gets fired up and needs to simmer down before my passion burns off the gentleness. I'll be keeping plugged in to hear how others might be asking/ handling questions. Thanks, Lysa! This was great!

Thanks so much for the insight. It is just so sad though, so many people searching for something meaningful, yet never looking for the One who came to give meaning to everything.

Great stuff.

It's an older book, but one that I would recommend for understanding your faith is Know Why You Believe. I think it is still in pring. It was written by Paul Little. It does a great job laying the foundations of what Christianity is all about.

Take care.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! We as Christians need to stand up against the trends that the world is trying to throw at us, especially when it comes from such a "powerful" woman--I have been literally disgusted with A LOT of stuff I have heard Oprah say, and I am SO glad to hear you speak against it. Honestly, it was actually a hesitating factor for me when I first came to your blog as to whether I should hold merit to what you say (because of your link to her show). I have been blessed by your blog though, and am a continual, almost-daily reader and find your words to be inspirational! Thanks again!

Thank you for helping equip us to respond to this newest "rage" in the spiritual realm. I do take some encouragement from the fact that these things seem to pop up all the time yet rarely last - The DaVinci Code, The Golden Compass, etc. There is so much hype and then they just disappear within months. I know Oprah has a MUCH greater influence than the promoters of those examples, but I also know that God's Word has stood the test of time and He is not afraid of these "false prophets." He is still on the throne! I guess my point is that we need to be ready with an answer, but don't need to be "defensive" on God's behalf. Thanks for helping us be ready with an answer!

As a person who does not watch Oprah, hardly ever catches the news, and pretty much just plays with an 8 month old all day - except for teaching in the morning - I had no idea who this Tolle person was or that Oprah was highlighting him.
I'm glad you are on the battlefield, aware of the enemy and helping others to combat in this end time fight.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for giving us some ammunition. I do not want to read the book b/c I don't want to confuse my mind (plus I read a few excerpts and honestly I can't figure out what the man is saying!) between the lies and God's truth. I decided not to read the book and instead to stick with reading God's truth in the hope that if God will reveal enough truth, I will recognize the lies and He will give me words to defend my faith when they are needed. My mind can come up with enough trash on its own. I don't need Tolle's or anyone else's help!

I really appreciate how you have approached this. We are supposed to be able to give an answer for the hope that we have in Jesus. You are answering from your heart and from the Word. Thanks, Lysa.

Lysa, keep it coming. I have been so very heavy laden with this new talk of Oprah's. I love Oprah and adore so much of what she does but it is truly all for nothing in the end if she does not see that CHRIST is the ONLY WAY. I really feel such a burden for her. To be all that she is and yet to fall so obviously short of the mark. I hope that we will all continue to educate ourselves about her movement but that we will also remember to stop and pray for Oprah as well. To have so many things right and yet fall so short..such an utter saddness. I can only imagine what Christ must feel. She's so close to TRUTH and yet so FAR AWAY.

Thanks for this information. I also have a freind asking about it and din't know how to answer.

Thank you SO much for posting this Lysa. I had it bookmarked in my Bloglines as I wanted to read it at a time when I could properly absorb it and think about it. Great points. I have often wondered how to answer questions people have and you have set me in the right direction.

Off to read part II...

I do believe that we are living in a time in history when absolute truth is slipping away, and we have to stand up for it EVERY chance we can! I hurt for Oprah. She truly seems like someone who wants to help people, but she has somehow been led astray by this man's teachings. You are right, the book has just enough Scripture to make people think, "wow! This guy knows his Bible!" Thank you for your words this morning!

Love, Tammy

PS Totally off the subject, but deeply on my heart.....can you please pray (as well as anyone who reads this) for my son Nick. He has just been diagnosed with his
6th brain tumor (one was on his spine). He has surgery next Wednesday in Columbus, OH, and my husband and I are feverishly researching treatment options at this time. Thank you so very much!

Lysa,

Thanks for addressing this. I have had so many ask me about it. I pray that this info will help equip women to be bold for Christ and the truth!

Wow! What a powerful and informative blog. I have heard of Mr. Tolle, but I am not familiar with any of his work. I tend NOT to read New Age stuff. I am trying very hard to read the Bible and to REALLY understand the meaning behind the scripture and apply it to my life.

The Proverbs 31 daily devo. and blogs are great! They really inspire me to be not only a better Christian, but woman. And to remember and stand up for Christ.

Keep up the great work!!

God bless!

Thank you Lysa for addressing this issue. It was brought to my attention that Oprah helped launch this book as well as the concepts of this New age movement not to mention the fact that she supported and helped launched the Secret. I personally do not watch Oprah anymore but I noticed that there was no mentioning of this new manipulation of using her stage as a help to surge this into Christian homes. And I'm not only talking Oprah, I'm talking all of junk on TV that is justifying our views and demeaning our standard... or should I say Christ's standard.

Keep the faith strong! Never Compromise. I am reminded that the word says that In the last days, even the very elect if it were possible would be deceived. Read 2 timothy 2 and 3rd chapters. Be encouraged my brothers and sisters for this war is raging hard but we must use our spiritual armor to fight and stand strong. It's not always easy, especially when it seems sooo many are "falling" for the lies but I know that in Christ we are Victorious and that encourages me to just pray more agains the Spirit of the Antichrist which is working even now to "blind" those who do not believe (2 corinth. 4:1-4) I love my sisters in Christ and I am praying for the Spirit of Boldness to come upon the Remnant seed of us who refuse to give in. I love my Father God, His Son The Christ and His Intercessor the Holy spirit for All that They are doing to help us WIN!!! In God's Love-

Hi everyone. I have done a lot of studying of the New Age movement for several years. I had been involved in witchcraft in my teens and have been very sensitive to anything occultic. I am so glad that more and more christians are getting informed. As an ex-marine, one thing I learned was...always know your enemy. I was criicized for my research into the occult/new age years ago. However, as time goes on, believers are realizing how the new age is infiltrating every aspect of our lives, even the church. God bles you for being bold enough to take a stand & to spread this information. Love in Christ to all.

It is times like these that I wish from the very bottom of my being I could physically wrap my arms around the neck of my Jesus,my Saviour, and thank Him for sweet, free,SIMPLE, endless salvation & His boundless love....What He so unselfishly did for me at Calvary.(OK..I just came back from Israel..I "understand" things that I never "GOT" before!!)Gethsemane tore my heart out.

I know I must try to have some knowledge of this stuff.....it is very attractive to people because it is comfortable. "I get to be me,just as I am, only deeper,If I hum more." So, I must study, to become sly as a serpent, and as gentle as a dove, not to argue, but to deliver the truth, firmly, without apology, with love, and then live a life to back my words up (They are watching!!)............... umm..I better go pray!!!!Sweet Squeezes!!

WOW Lysa...I wrote you a comment about this a long time ago when Oprah started this new class...and I don't know how I missed this POST
but as I read the P31 evotional for today May 16th...I couldn't even finish when I rushed over here to quickly leave a comment-
to find this post from April 21...

I'm overwhelmed!

I thought I was in the wrong place when I ended up in April only to discover an even more profound response to this Oprah class!

MY first RESPONSE was BRAVO LYSA-
stand up sister and preach it...as it is...the TRUTH...the gospel of Jesus Christ...stop people from being misled and deceived and let's put these poor misguided...people seeking the TRUTH,toward the only WAY...One way...Jesus...The True LIGHT out of their darkness, confusion, etc.

I thought the only recourse when I caught wind of this highly influential teaching being shared with millions was to PRAY, pray for Oprah. Pray for her eyes to be opened to God's ONLY Truth and Word for her! Then pray for mercy!

BUT MOSTLY pray for the ONES being MISLED and DECEIVED!

But you are so right...it is up to us to stand and be more than deeply spiritual...but a beacon for the lost, a true witness as
your P31 ministry is...to bring and show JESUS in our everyday life, to SPEAK OUT!!!

AMEN Lysa...I've been waiting to see this and from the 87 comments before...so have others...because WE are SO THANKFUL for the SAVING GRACE of knowing JESUS! Bless you!

Thanks for posting these truths! I used to be a NEW AGE junkie before I was found by my FATHER and saved by his neverending grace. They give you a false leading that you will be fulfilled. There was emptiness that I tried to fill with those false doctrines that only JESUS could fill. I am grateful that GOD kept HIS hand upon me during that time. I have been a woman in pursuit of GOD's heart for 6 years and counting now. However, my bestfriend is still caught up in this NEW Age falsehood. I pray to GOD that HE will save her as HE did me. I share the truths of the WORD with her whenever I get a chance. Thanks again!

I tried to read this book and just couldn't get into it...but I was a bit leary from a few parts that I did read. Thanks for providing a clear perspective on it!

I think God gave me this "mommy brain" (with 2 kids under age 4) right now so I that I wouldn't be sucked in by some new age mumbo jumbo...Yeah God! Thanks Lysa!

I think that there are many ways to everlasting life...and there are many different interpretations of the Bible.

To its credit, Buddhism can claim that in the 2,500 years of its history, it has not burned one witch, fought one holy war nor destroyed heretics...

No Buddhist who understands the Buddha's teaching thinks that other religions are wrong. No-one who has made a genuine effort to examine other religions with an open mind could think like that either. The first thing you notice when you study the different religions is just how much they have in common. All religions acknowledge that man's present state is unsatisfactory. All believe that a change of attitude and behaviour is needed if man's situation is to improve. All teach an ethics that includes love, kindness, patience, generosity and social responsibility and all accept the existence of some form of Absolute.

I try to understand your Christian way but it doesn't seem very Christ-like...I thought Jesus loved ALL. I don't think you should feel threatened by Eckhart Tolle...a man of peace and love.
