Question:
With your busy schedule, how do you find time to run most days, if you still are that is! Does anyone hold you accountable? I love to run but need encouragement to stick to it.
Answer:
First of all, I must tell you that I am not naturally one of those exercise loving girls. I exercise because it is an obedience thing with me and the Lord and it is the only way I can keep my weight managed. But since I've made it part of my daily routine and I have great conversations with my running partner, Holly, I've learned to love it.
So, I get up before anyone else is awake and meet Holly at her house. We usually run for an hour and then I head back home. My kids are responsible for getting themselves up, dressed, and packing their things for school. By the time I get home we have about 30 minutes before we have to head out the door. I help finish packing lunches, make sure something with some sort of nutritional value gets in their bellies and head off to school hoping no one needs me to get out of my car in the carpool line.
Encouragement to keep running:
Do it with a friend... Holly and I hold each other accountable. If I ever don't want to get out of bed, I think about her waiting on me and I have to get up.
Find your pace... I think Holly and I are slow runners but we've found a pace we can go at for a good length of time so it works. We would rather run slower for a long time than faster with a short time.
Just one mailbox at a time... When getting started, set your sights on a marker on your street, run to that point, then stop and walk until you catch your breath. Then find another marker and repeat this same process. As you get in shape, lengthen your running times and shorten your walking times until you can run straight through.
Reward Yourself... Each time I meet one of my goals, I reward myself with something like a manicure, a new outfit, movies out with my friends, etc...
And remember to drink plenty of water! Holly and put bottles of water in her mailbox and stop to drink each time we pass by it on our running route. It's a great excuse to stop and catch our breath...plus keep hydrated is important!
