Shannon in Minnesota asks:
My husband and I just looked over your Oprah interview. I was touched by it completely. I have a heart for adoption, and pray that God will open the door for that to happen some day. My husband also thought it was a great interview, but was disturbed by Oprah opening the race card. The issue of white parents raising black children. He firmly believes that it may be a cultural issue but not a race issue. We are all created equal, and the color of our skin shouldn't have come up.....what are your thoughts on this? She mentioned this issue in both parts of the video.
My Answer:
I praise the Lord that race has not been an issue with our adoption. It does cause people to be curious because it is obvious from first glance that our boys are adopted. Many neat witnessing opportunities have come from sharing our story with others.
Oprah is a master interviewer and always asks the questions that others are wondering. I don't always agree with her thoughts but I was actually glad she addressed this issue. I loved the way my son honestly answered this question. It is worth watching if you haven't clicked on the Oprah link and watched the second part of the interview where she talks to my son about having white parents.
Here are my thoughts on white parents raising black children:
This has nothing to do with our color or their color. It has everything to do with the fact that we are all created equally in God's image, both black and white.
When my boys fall and scrape their knee, they bleed.
When my boys get upset, they cry salty tears.
Tucked inside my boy's hearts are real hopes and dreams for their futures.
My job as their mom is to bandage their knees, wipe their tears, and develop their Christian character to match God's calling on their lives.
Great Question Shannon!
Blessings...
