Have you ever had one of those moments where you simply and utterly felt amazed? So amazed that it rendered you speechless? Being speechless doesn’t happen often in my world filled with both spoken and the written words. I am rarely at a loss for words and I’m surrounded by people both old and young who have plenty of words as well. However, this weekend, I was speechless.
I was teaching at a retreat in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains. Half way through the retreat a woman walked up to me after I’d just shared about our adopted sons Mark and Jackson and said, “Can I share with you the rest of your story?”
Uncertain as to what she meant by her question, I just simply nodded my head. “Well, God is using your story in ways that you’ll never find out about. But I know of one of the ripple affects of your story that I think you would be delighted to hear.” She went on to share that she and her husband host a non-believer’s small group in her home. It is a safe way for people who are curious about the Christian faith to find out more. About a year ago a Buddhist man came to the group with one question on his mind.
He had seen an article written about some Christian people in North Carolina who had adopted children from Liberia Africa and he wanted to know why. Why would these people who had children of their own already go through the trouble and risk of taking in orphans from the other side of the world. He’d read that they credited God speaking to their hearts. He couldn’t process that. He needed to know more about this God.
I often say, people don’t care to meet our Jesus until they meet the reality of Jesus in our lives. He had met the reality of Jesus through reading an article and over time, this Buddhist man came to know Jesus Christ as His personal Lord and Savior. He became so passionate about his new faith that he went back to Thailand to tell his whole Buddhist family the truth of Jesus Christ. Amazing.
I am more convinced now than ever before that a woman who says yes to God in big ways and in small ways is a world changer. Sometimes the world seems so big and the commission to tell all the world about Jesus can seem quite daunting. However, I have personally experienced the wonder of simply being obedient to whatever is right in front of me and it is enough. My job is obedience. God’s job is results.
And the world is changed. I am amazed. Amazed to the point of being left speechless.
